Qin soldiers
Made with ibisPaint. More shading experimentation, not too happy with how it turned out. The crossbow is also... not entirely accurate. It's more or less a chu ko nu without any of the fancy rapid-fire mechanisms. I guess I was picturing a regular crossbow with a magazine.
ibisPaint again, and more shading experimenting again.
Scythian clothes are always fun to colour, though it can get out of hand sometimes. Like here: his tunic cries Santa and his trousers cry Sweden.
Varangian Guardsman
Made with ibisPaint. Started off as a throwaway, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. The exaggerated lines work a lot better than I thought they would've. Also my first experimenting with shadows, not too bad. Definitely come far since this guy…

The hip-thrustyness seems a bit disconcerting now that I look at it, but anyway Varangians were apparently quite... lusty. So it works. Click below for an animated version…
Dominate + Romano-Byzantine Heavy Infantry

Top row: Dominate-period armoured legionaries (Berkasovo helmet, Intercisa helmet, Deir el Medina spangenhelm, Deurne helmet)
Bottom row: Justinianic armoured infantryman, Justinianic dismounted bucellarius, militiaman from Rome (during AD 537 siege), Maurikian front-rank armoured infantryman, Heraclian armoured infantryman (Avar-style spangenhelm, also crested helmet cover)

well there's a lot of stuff out there, anything i can get my hands on. The artwork of the late Angus McBride remains one of the best sources for ancient military

Hi! I have to say, the pure simplicity of your cartoon style, combined with very historically accurate equipement of the soldiers you depict is very interesting and pleasant! I like it a lot! +watch
